Great Move by Stern

Thank you, David Stern, thank you.

Stern has his faults. He's stubborn and sometimes slow to act but there's a reason why he's the best commissioner in sports and what he just did is another example why.

The NBA announced that Stern appointed former United States Army Major General Ronal L. Johnson to the new position of Senior Vice President, Referee Operations.

As many NBA sources have told me over the past few months -- pleaded really -- the NBA needed a strong head to oversee its referee operations and hiring a former Army general certainly fits the bill.

It's clear this has long been needed. NBA officiating this year, in my opinion, was among the worst I've seen in professional basketball i the some 20 years I've been around the sport. Throw in the Tim Donaghy scandal and the NBA was long overdue for something like this.

"I'm thrilled," said Mark Cuban in an e-mail to me. "This is exactly what the NBA needed."

When you read Johnson's bio you cannot help but be impressed.

But what Stern did is more than appointing someone highly qualified. It's an admission, finally, by Stern, something needed to be done about his officials.

And I don't believe Johnson will be a "yes man." I think he'll have real, significant power and say.

So thank you, Stern, for doing the right thing.

Best player to emerge from this draft will be...

Chris Douglas-Roberts.

So that's maybe a stretch. But that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

A safer bet: Kevin Love.

Love me some Love.

Final thought: Rose and Beasley will struggle but Mayo will prosper.

They already have a nickname for him in Minnesota: Mayo Clinic.

Not bad.

Goodnight all and may you never clap your hands like an annoying YES exec.

Gallinari = Donovan McNabb?

I'm back, b------.

One last thought on Gallinari selection by the Knicks. It wasn't quite as vicious but the booing of Gallinari by Knicks fans reminded me of the year Donovan McNabb was booed by Eagles fans at the Garden in the NFL Draft.

The Toronto Raptors selected Roy Hibbert. I once made the mistake of thinking this guy could carry the Hoyas. The only thing Hibbert can carry is the soft tag.

Clapping YES guy update: He's gone!

Went home to bug his wife with his annoying clapping.

But the dumb bastard left his garbage on the table.

Four more picks until the first round is over.

I could use a blueberry Pop Tart right about now.

Great story: Darrell Arthur gets a standing ovation from the crowd after being selected by New Orleans. It was thought he'd go earlier but ESPN reported there was some sort of health issue that lowered his stock.

The only issue that should keep him from getting drafted is if he claps annoyingly.

D.J. Augustin Will Get Physically Beat Up
Charlotte selected a player I used to love: D.J. Augustin.

Then I watched him get abused by Derrick Rose. It was embarrassing.

And if he's 5-11, I'm 6-10.

By the way, Larry Brown made the pick, then promptly took another job.

The Nets picked Brook Lopez. Nice pick actually. They're extremely soft in the middle.

Larry Brown was just named coach of the Essex Community College Thundercats.

"I promise you this is my last coaching job," he told the media.

Then he resigned to coach the Princeton Women's Volleyball team.

The guy's going in the Hall of Fame but Brown's coached so many teams his contracts now include a suitcase surcharge.

So that's going to do it for my blogging for an hour or so. I have a real column to write and a community to incite.

That rhymes.

I'll return to rap up the first round.

The YES foof is back. He's not clapping however. He's eating a pretzel.

His hands are occupied.
Thank goodness.
